Jules Verne

Born in Nantes, Brittany, France, on 8th February 1823, Jules Gabriel Verne is considered to be the pioneer of the science fiction genre and referred to as the ‘Founding Father of Science Fiction’.

He is probably the most read author in the world as his works were translated into nearly all other languages.

The son of an attorney, Pierre, and Sophie, he was the eldest of five children. He had passion for exploration and travel, which manifested in much of his work. As a young boy, he was caught sneaking onto a ship headed for India and after a severe punishment from his father for it, he decided that travelling through the imagination was safer.

He studied law in Paris where his uncle introduced him to the literary circles. He had personally known writers such as Alexander Dumas (son) and Victor Hugo.

While his one-act comedy 'The Broken Straws’ was performed in Paris when he was only 22, however, his best known works are ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ (1864), ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea’ (1870), and ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ (1873).

Nearly forty years prior to his death, Verne made an agreement with his publishers to keep the pace of writing two novels each year. Not only he kept his promise, but he was about twelve books ahead of his agreement at the time of his death.

Jules Verne wrote about air, space, and underwater, well before the invention of planes, submarines and space travel. Some of Verne’s titles have made their way to the big screen several times.

He died in Amiens, France, at the age of seventy-seven on 24 March 1905.
