Born in Paris, France, on 6th May 1868 into a wealthy business family, Gaston Leroux was sent to a school in Normandy and returned to Paris to study law. Shortly after graduating and on his father's death, Gaston inherited a fortune and lived life to the full. By the following year, Gaston had spent all the money and turned to a career as court reporter and theatre critic.

He established himself as a successful journalist and travelled extensively to cover many significant world events. In 1907 he began writing fictions and two years later, he began turning his work into films through the establishement of his own movie company.

In the English-speaking world, he is best known for writing the novel The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, 1910), which has been made into several film and stage productions of the same name, such as the 1925 film starring Lon Chaney; and the worldwide acclaimed musical of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986.

During his life, he wrote many novels and other stories.
