Maurice-Marie-Emile Leblanc was born in Rouen, Normandy (France) on 11th November 1864. he son of a wealthy shipping owner, he received his education in France, Germany, and Italy, but dropped out his law studies to settle in Paris to become a crime writer and police reporter.

Leblanc first works appeared in periodicals such as Echo de Paris and was considered as a writer of short stories. But, it was not until the creation of Arsene Lupin, the ultimate gentleman thief that he gained international fame equalled only by that of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. In fact, Arsene Lupin met the great rival, Sherlock Holmes in Arsesne Lupin Versus Sherlock Holmes (1908).

Arsene Lupin character kept Leblanc busy for the following 25 years.

"He was a quiet, friendly man with a large moustache who liked to play chess and to write in his glass-enclosed study, designed to catch every ray of natural light."

Maurice Leblanc was awarded the French "Legion of Honour" for his services to literature.

He died in 1941 in Perpignan, France.
