Edgar Rice Burroughs
Born in Chicago, Illinois on 1st September 1875, Edgar Rice Burroughs was educated at local schools, attended the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and graduated in 1895 from the Michigan Military Academy. He ended up as an enlisted soldier with the 7th U.S. Cavalry in Fort Grant, Arizona Territory but was discharged in 1897 as he was diagnosed with heart problems.

Following many changes of low paid jobs and marriage with Emma Centennia Hulbert in 1900 he began to write fictions in 1911. His first story "Under the Moons of Mars" was published as a series in The All-Story magazine in 1912. By that time, he had completed two full-length novels including "Tarzan of the Apes" which began his most successful series and successful writing career.

Burroughs also wrote popular science fiction and fantasy stories, but Tarzan was and remains a cultural sensation to this day.

In 1923 Burroughs set up his own company, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., and began printing his own books through the 1930s. He divorced Emma in 1934 and married former actress Florence Gilbert Dearholt in 1935, ex-wife of his friend, Ashton Dearholt, adopting the Dearholts' two children. They divorced in 1942.
He died in 1950.
